Statistics

Based on the 2022 Student Reports of Bullying: Results From the 2022 School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey published by the National Center for Educational Statistics at the Institute of Education Sciences, here are some key statistics on bullying among U.S. students in grades 6–12.

  • Overall Prevalence: 19% of students reported being bullied during the 2021–22 school year. ​
  • By Gender: 22% of female students and 17% of male students reported being bullied. ​
  • By Grade Level: Bullying was more prevalent in middle school (26%) compared to high school (16%). ​
  • Cyberbullying: Among those bullied, 28% of females and 14% of males experienced cyberbullying.
  • Repeated Bullying: 12% of students reported being repeatedly bullied by someone more powerful. ​
  • Negative Self-Perception: 38% of bullied students reported negative feelings about themselves.
  • Academic Impact: 27% of bullied students reported negative effects on their schoolwork. ​
  • Social Relationships: 24% reported negative effects on relationships with family and friends. ​
  • Physical Health: 19% reported negative effects on their physical health due to bullying. ​
  • Reporting to Adults: 44% of bullied students notified an adult at school about the incident. ​
  • Frequency of Bullying: Students bullied more than 10 days in the school year were more likely (59%) to report the incidents.  
  • Types of Bullying: The most common types were being the subject of rumors (13%) and being made fun of, called names, or insulted (12%).
  • Physical Bullying: 5% reported being pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on.
  • Exclusion: 4% reported being excluded from activities on purpose.
